Class Overview
Today, we explored the critical role universities play in advancing Sustainable Development. We focused on understanding how universities initiatives, infrastructure, and community efforts that align with SDGs. The lecturer gave us a video that relate to the topic for research, innovation, and leadership in sustainability practices. Students were tasked with identifying locations on the IIUM campus that reflect sustainable development, creatively engaging with the environment, and insightful lessons connecting from the experiences. so, we chose the mosque for our location.
Personal Reflection
The course has really enhanced my understanding of the fact that universities are not only institutions of learning but also major contributors to progress in society. During this lecture, I came to understand how multidimensional sustainability can be incorporated in each aspect of campus life, from green spaces to infrastructure—building with energy efficiency in mind. Now as a student, I feel more responsible for observing and contributing to these efforts through everyday actions, such as proper waste management and creating awareness about eco-friendly initiatives on campus.
Application of Learning
From this assignment, I learned how to critically observe campus facilities and relate them to the principles of sustainability. For instance, choosing a venue such as the IIUM Eco-Pond emphasized water conservation and biodiversity preservation. This activity imparted in me ways of putting into practice knowledge learned from theory by observation and analysis. Moreover, it emphasized teamwork in addressing real-world issues like that of sustainability.
Areas of Improvement
One area of improvement in my practice is increasing the strength in observation and analytical skills to connect visual elements with the concepts of sustainability. Also, during group activities, I could have managed time better to ensure balanced contribution from all members. On a broader level, I intend to proactively seek more opportunities to get involved in campus sustainability programs to advance my practical knowledge.
Conclusion
That class really made me realize how big a role universities could play in leading this massive process of sustainable development. IIUM campus visit has taught me from a different perspective how academic institutions can showcase the example of sustainability. The activity called for critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration—all skills needed to deal with challenges of sustainability on a global scale. Looking ahead, it inspires me so much to put those lessons into action in my academic journey and personal actions to contribute to a much more sustainable future.
