WEEK 8 - ROLES OF INSTITUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (SDG 16 & 17)

Class Overview

In the last class, "Roles of Institutions for Sustainable Development", we had a chance to consider in detail the importance of SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals), presented by the lecturer who has international relations of these goals in creating sustainable development. A key focus was on Malaysia's Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development, which maps out how the country addresses the integration of sustainability into its governance structures. Further, we discussed the role of institutions, local entities, and individuals in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing collaboration and collective action.

Personal Reflection

This class has indeed broadened my understanding of the integral role that institutions play in driving sustainable development and how partnerships can be a force to attain global goals. It made me reflect on my role as an individual in contributing to these efforts. I felt so inspired by the lecturer's explanation of Malaysia's proactive approach to sustainability and realized that personal actions, when combined with institutional efforts, can lead to meaningful change. It was an intellectually enriching session that made me contemplate my responsibilities toward sustainability.

Application of Learning

Gained insights can be applied in many different ways, particularly in promoting sustainability practices in my daily life and academics. I could focus on creating awareness for the SDGs in my community by fostering a culture of cooperation in supporting such initiatives. As a future educator, this will be an opportunity for me to apply this in my teaching of sustainability and inspire students that they can be agents in global and local development.

Area of Improvement

One area that I would like to work on is the deepening of the understanding of Malaysia's Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development. While the class provided a broad overview, I need to explore more about the policies, programs, and partnerships in depth so that I can appreciate the implementation and impact of such. Also, I would have to improve my knowledge regarding the challenges institutions face in reaching the SDGs and how they can be overcome.

Conclusion

The class was illuminating, showing how institutions and individuals work together toward sustainable development. It also emphasized the need for partnerships, governance, and participation. I am motivated to expand my knowledge and support SDG 16 and 17 initiatives locally and globally. This session was a key step in understanding sustainability principles.

  6. can you define peace and justice within IIUM community. for example, the international students are being neglected somehow in this community. you can see there's a gap if you're really an IIUM community

    1. Peace and justice in IIUM are about making sure everyone feels included and treated fairly. If international students feel left out, that’s something we should work on as a community. We need to listen to each other and find ways to bridge that gap so everyone feels like they truly belong here.🤗
